This lens features Canon’s perfected Ultrasonic Motor for its auto focus mechanism. It is a great lens for far away shooting such as you would do at sports arenas, football fields, in the wilderness and while traveling. Landscapes are photographed wonderfully by this telephoto zoom lens. It really pulls your subject in close so you can capture images hundreds of yards off into the distance with almost perfect optical clarity and precision focusing.
The lens's auto focus rings are superior to the similar 75-300mm model because of the higher performance ring type ultra sonic auto focusing motor(USM). By only providing the popular zoom range of 100mm to 300mm instead of starting at 28mm, 55mm or 70mm like other Canon telephoto zoom lenses, this lens is able to be shorter and lighter than other lenses with zoom ranges of up to 300mm. The lens is medium priced when compared to other 300mm capable lenses.
The EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM also features rear moving focus rings so that the front rings never move adding full time manual focus to its list of professional quality features. Manual focus isn’t possible on all lenses limiting the types of effects you can create manually, but you can have full auto focus with full time manual override with this telephoto zoom lens for the professional shooter or even currently learning amateurs.
