Quick facts about Canon SLR & Canon Digital SLR lens mounts:
- FL Lenses were created to fit the standard 35mm film camera of the day. Discontinued in 1964, these lenses can also be used with the successor FD mount cameras.
- FD Lenses were discontinued in 1987, however FD lenses enjoy a cult following of film camera enthusiasts. Upon their discontinuation they were replaced by newer EF mount cameras.
- EF (Electric Focus) Lenses are Canon's current standard for EOS Cameras and are compatible with both film and digital EOS cameras however the sensor on Canon's digital cameras caused Canon to release their line of EF-S lenses specifically for Canon digital EOS cameras.
- EF-S (Electric Focus w/ Short Back Focus) Lenses are made specifically for Canon's Digital EOS Cameras and are backwards compatible with standard EF mounts.
